‘Good geezer’ wins New York award for crime movie

Kent’s own Guy Ritchie has picked up a major award for his London gangster movie.

It took the Best International Feature at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.

Bill Maloney’s small company, Pie ‘n’ Mash Film’s made the movie Lunatic on a micro budget on purpose, to create a certain reality to it, something British films are famed for.

Maloney stresses he is not in the business to make his millions, but rather to use film to show the struggles of the individual.

He told KOS Media: “I was in New York for the awards ceremony and was there on the nights we had to be.

“Then myself and me personal assistant Lilly went on to the streets of Harlem with a digital camcorder talking to the people there to find out how they live and how they cope.

“What we saw was frightening. One guy pulled a gun on us – he waved it around in my face and then walked off. He was not threatening me – just saw the camera, two white people and was just showing off. But it was a worrying moment.

“We really were putting our lives at risk for this documentary I wanted to shoot.

“I am now working in my chalet in Herne Bay cutting it together to make a short film where I get killed. It’s going to be called Billy and Lilly in New York and is out in September.

“I live for making film, and I only want to make gritty down to earth films with real people in it. My last film, was a black comedy called The Blunderers and most of the people in that come from the streets of Kent’s coastal towns like Margate. That is also out in September.”

Maloney’s main movie to date, Lunatic, has been described as Good Geezers, like Good Fellas. It is a gangster film shot with just £40,000 and very few edits, to “keep it as realistic as possible”.

He is also working on a secret new film called The Brass.

Maloney came from a deprived background with alcoholic parents spending time in care and a young offenders’ institution.

The 52-year-old runs Pie ‘n’ Mash films with wife Maria who looks after all the administration and daughter Regan, 31, the director of photography.

He is determined to stay in the same south east London flat he has lived in for three decades and is proud to have beaten the bottle himself.

Maria said: “I did worry about him when he said he was going off into Harlem, but he is very good at defusing situations rather than inflaming them.”

Bill said: “I only feel alive when I am behind a camera – I love it.”

Lunatic is available from many popular online DVD stores including play.com; hmv.com; amazon.co.uk and for rental from lovefilm.com.
