Birthdays are occasions for looking forward to the making of plans, for dreaming dreams, and hoping they will come true.

Birthday celebrations are never complete without a birthday card. Although there exist several diverse types of birthday cards that are available in the gift shops, making a birthday card for someone is a very sweet gesture. If you think making your own birthday cards is too complicated, let me tell you that it’s not and there are several ways in which you can make a homemade card look as classy and attractive as the ones in the stores. Here are some ideas for you if you want to create your own birthday cards:

Photo Birthday Cards

If you have some wonderful photographs that remind you of all the fond memories of times spent together, then creating birthday cards using these photographs is a wonderful idea. For people who have a computer, you can create a soft copy of the birthday card using a good card-making application and get it printed! To give the card that lustrous look, you can take a printout on a glossy photo-paper, which is generally used to print the photographs. In case you don’t have a computer or not very keen on using it, you can simply stick the hard copies of photographs onto paper while creating a birthday card. Photo birthday cards can also be preserved in photo frames to cherish the fond memories over the years.

Do-It-Yourself Birthday Cards

Sometimes we need a bit of help while taking up a particular task. If you need a little bit of help to get started on birthday card designs and layouts, then the do-it-yourself (DIY) birthday card kits will help you. The DIY birthday card kits provide you blank cards and some basic decorative accessories like paper flowers, beads and stick-on decorations, which help you to make a birthday card on your own.

Creative Birthday Cards

If you are confident about your drawing, painting or craft skills, then it is always better to create a birthday card that is a unique piece of art in itself. All you need to do is start with your empty canvas and create a painting that you think will be appropriate for a birthday card. Even if you are good at crafts like origami or any other similar arts, then you can create a birthday card using those skills. If you create an innovative card on your own you are not just presenting a birthday card but a memento, which can be cherished for a long time.

E-cards/Online Birthday Cards

Most of us are Internet-savvy and hence e-cards are an obvious choice for people who are short of time and want to send a birthday card with the click of a mouse. In case you are planning to send an electronic birthday card, there are options that allow you to customize the e-cards as well. In case you want to check out the customized e-cards, you can have a look at our collection of ecards.<!-- This page was viewed on Buzzle.com on 12/4/2008 1:47:03 AM. There are varied genres of music as people have different tastes. For e.g., classical music, rock, jazz, metal, rap, folk etc. But the objective remains the same. The aim of all music is to touch the core of the heart and thus music can be called an expression of our heart’s saying. To understand and know about different genres of music, let us have a look at the following genres.

Different Music Genres

Classical Music: Classical music is a complex form of music as it requires high musical skills, like learning the ragas and ability to coordinate with other musicians. One has to maintain the complex relationship between its emotional flows. If you wish to learn this music, then you have to go through proper training.

Rock Music: This music genre originated in the rock and roll era of 1950s. The vocals are accompanied by guitar, drum and bass. (Read information on musical instruments.) Certain rock groups also use piano, synthesizer, saxophone, flute, mandolin and sitar for a deeper effect. This type of music has several sub genres, such as hard rock, progressive rock and metal rock. All these types of rock music are popular till date.

Metal Music: Metal music emerged after the Second World War. Here the melody of the song is heavily influenced by the structure of the songs. While in rock music, songwriting is based within a form; in metal music, the central melody decides the structure of the song. It is also known as ‘information music’.

Hip-hop Music: Hip-hop music always includes the use of instruments such as guitar, violin, fiddle, piano, bass and drums. In these types of music, the bass is the main instrument. This can be used in different intensities to emote feelings of anger, pride and others. The roots of the music are found in African American and West African music. It was first played by a group of traveling singers and poets of West Africa.

Wedding Ceremony Music: Wedding music is used in the ceremonies like wedding.
The term “shade” has many variations in gardening. A shade in gardening could possibly mean a dimly lit area beneath tall trees, a bright but a non-sunny spot or an area that gets sunlight for a few hours in the morning and shade for the remaining day.

There is a wide variety of plants that have been categorized as shade garden plants. A well-landscaped shade garden or a shaded garden has a charm of its own. Choose the flowering plants that grow well in the shade. The bloom color of the plants should complement each other to harmonize the appearance of the garden. The shade garden provides a cooling and soothing effect to one’s eyes in summer. Landscaping plays a prominent role while developing a shaded garden.

A few things that you need to take into account before planning a shaded garden are the type of shade and soil texture. There are two types of shades - partial shade and total shade. This is an important criterion to choose the plants according to degree of the shade.

The soil-texture of the area should also be considered. The soil-texture could be either damp or dry. You need to prepare the soil before planting. You can mix mulch with the soil to create a perfect soil texture.

Like the plants that grow in sunlight, the shade garden plants also require regular watering. If you are planning for a shade garden under the tall trees, remember, the trees would guzzle moisture leaving very little for the shade plants. Hence, it is wise to water the plant regularly or depending on the basis of the soil-texture.

A Few Shaded Plants

You need to understand the degree of shade of the site you have chosen for a shade garden. Remember, the shades vary from dense shade to partial shade. Choose your shade garden plants accordingly. It is always better to choose the plants that match the conditions of a proposed site, instead of changing the pre-existing conditions. Here are the examples of some of the shade garden plants.

Monkshood - This plant is ideal for partial or dapple shade. The blooms of the monkshood would last for a couple of months. This plant is pest and disease resistant.

Fern - Fern is one the plants that is widely used in shade gardening. It has a unique appearance and grows well in all degrees of shades.

Golden Dead Nettle - This plant is one of the plants that would make a wonderful ground cover. It would make an ideal border plant for the garden. Golden Dead nettle is one of the preferred plants for container gardening.

Japanese Yew - There is a wide variety of colors in Japanese yew. It is mostly used as a foundation plant and would also make an excellent border hedge. This plant is commonly used in rock gardens.

Turk’s Cap Hibiscus - This plant blooms in summer and autumn. It is a perennial plant and would make an ideal plant for shade gardens. The bright colored flowers attract butterflies and small birds such as hummingbirds.

Wood Anemones - This is one of the perennial plants that grow well in shady areas. The blooms are star-shaped and are known as sepals. There are two types of blooms - white-colored and blue-colored.

Shade gardening is one of the many types of gardening techniques that is in vogue. Some of the plants that are preferred by gardeners for shade gardening are lily of the valley, bunchberry, shooting star, forget-me-not and many more.<!-- This page was viewed on Buzzle.com on 12/4/2008 1:37:02 AM.

Diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes is a disease condition characterized by high blood sugar level, i.e. hyperglycemia. The hormone ‘insulin’, which is secreted by pancreas, controls the sugar metabolism of the body. High blood sugar level is either due to less production of insulin or body’s resistance to insulin and sometimes both. There are mainly three types of diabetes based on the causes: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is due to failure of insulin production by the body, whereas Type 2 diabetes is the result of failure of insulin utilization by the body. Type 1 diabetes was also called juvenile diabetes, as it was earlier believed that only children suffer from this type. Gestational diabetes resembles Type 2 diabetes and occurs in pregnant women at any time during the course of pregnancy. Both hereditary and environmental factors are responsible for causing diabetes.

Diabetes Symptoms

Usually, the early symptoms of diabetes are not so serious that many a times it goes unnoticed. So, very often one fails to diagnose diabetes in its early stages. Symptoms differ for each diabetes type. Let’s look into some of the commonly observed signs and symptoms of diabetes.

Frequent Urination (Polyuria): Since the glucose level in the blood increases more than the normal concentration, filtration and absorption by the kidney is incomplete. Thus, the resulted filtered liquid, which is excreted later as urine contains certain amount of sugar. This sugar increases the osmotic pressure and hampers the water absorption by the kidney, which results in frequent urination.

Increased Thirst (Polydipsia): Due to polyuria, the body losses excessive amount of fluid. It tries to compensate the fluid loss and balance the blood sugar level by consumption of more water. Thus, one experiences polydipsia.

Increased Appetite (Polyphagia): In order to lower down the blood sugar level, the body starts secreting more insulin. One of the important functions of insulin includes stimulating hunger. Thus, higher insulin level increases hunger.

Weight Loss: Weight loss is due to excessive loss of sugar and fluid due to polyuria. In addition, glucose from the digested food doesn’t reach the body cells. Patient suffering from Type 1 diabetes loses weight much faster than a patient with other types of diabetes.

Blurred Vision: Increased blood sugar level draws out fluid from the lenses due to high osmotic pressure. This results in poor focusing and hence, vision is blurred.

Increased Fatigue: Due to polyuria, patient gets dehydrated and feels tired. Also, most of the sugar from the body is excreted through urine. Thus, body experiences lack of sugar as a source of energy and simultaneously causes increased fatigue.

Increased Infection and Slow Healing: The exact cause for frequent infection and slow healing among diabetic patients has not been proved as yet. However, it is believed that the immune function of a diabetic patient is comparatively low as compared to a non-diabetic person. This may be due to presence of high sugar level in the blood, which in turn prevents the white blood cells from functioning properly.

Diabetes is one of the common chronic diseases in today’s generation. It is a very serious disease and should not ignored. Although, diabetes can be treated by providing insulin externally, it can’t be cured. Only timely diabetes treatment with correct medication, proper diet and exercise can help a patient to stay healthy and live longer. There are certain insulin resistance diets, which hampers the quick increase in blood sugar. Undergoing regular blood sugar and urine tests to detect diabetes is recommended. People who are obese, and also those having diabetes in their family history should be more careful.

The word “elephant” comes from the Greek word eléfas, meaning “elephant” or “ivory”. Elephants are the largest terrestrial animals on earth. They also have the largest brains. Elephants evolved in the Pleistocene epoch, i.e. 2 millions to 10,000 years ago. They belong to the family Elephantidae, which comprises of three species: the Forest Elephant, the Savannah Elephant and the Asian Elephant. The Forest Elephant and the Savannah Elephant are commonly known as the African Elephant, whereas the Asian Elephant is known as the Indian Elephant.

Interesting Facts about Elephants

The most characteristic feature of elephants is their elongated “trunk” or “proboscis”, which is a fusion of nose and upper lip. Sometimes the elephant’s trunk is described as the longest nose (up to 8 feet). It has been found out that an elephant trunk has more than 40,000 muscles. The trunk is used for various purposes such as feeding, drinking, defending, interaction with others and also as a sensory organ.

“Tusk” or “ivory”, which is another extraordinary feature of an elephant, is nothing but the second upper incisor that grows continuously. It is one of the hereditary characters in elephants. An elephant may be either right-tusked or left-tusked. Tusks are mainly used as weapons. Tusks of an African Elephant can grow up to 10 feet long and can weigh up to 90 kilograms, whereas tusks of an Asian Elephant vary according to sex, female shows short or no tusk while male have lean tusk, which may be of 10 feet long and around 40 kilograms weight.

African Elephants are much bigger in size, possess two finger-like projections in their trunk, have flat forehead and have large ears and tusks, whereas in comparison, Asian Elephants are smaller in size, possess only one finger-like projection in their trunk, have two bumps on their forehead and have smaller ears and tusks.

Skin of elephant is about 2.5 cm thick and covered with light hairs, color of hair vary from grey to brown. Usually brown color is due to wallowing in dust or mud. Elephants usually wallow in mud to generate heat and also to protect from harmful rays and insects. The African elephants use their ears to aid in ventilation in maintaining temperature.

Elephants are herbivores and eat about 5% of their body weight. They spend nearly 16 hours a day in eating, however only 40% of the ingested food gets digested. They drink about 30-50 gallons of water.

An interesting phenomenon about elephants is their cycle of tooth rotation. An elephant can have 28 teeth in its entire life, which are 2 milk precursors of the tusk, 2 second upper incisor teeth, i.e. tusks, 12 premolar teeth and 12 molar teeth.

Females mature at about 11 years of age and stay in herds with the other older females, whereas males mature between 12 to 15 years of age and stay solitarily. Adult female elephant is called “cow” and adult male elephant is called “bull”. The sexual features are not so distinct for both males and females, and are often confused during identification. Male possesses internal testes, which can’t be seen and female possesses two teats between her front legs. Usually females are identified by their pronounced forehead, which is not present in case of males.

A male elephant mates with a female elephant at around 20 years of age. Before mating, a male elephant secretes a strong-smelling urine, which attracts compatible females. Sometimes, they communicate with a rumbling sound for mating.

Are you aware about the gestation period of elephant? Well, it would be 22 months, which is the longest of all the existing land animals. One calf is born at a time (very rarely twins). The young calf is nearly blind. It uses its trunk to explore its surroundings and relies on elders of that certain group. At birth, an elephant calf weighs about 100-120 kilograms and is about 2.5 feet tall. An elephant calf lives with its mother for many years.

Elephants are associated with many cultures. Asian cultures represented elephant as a symbol of “wisdom”, especially for their memory and intelligence. They are regarded as a very social, emotional and intelligent group. The entire herd takes care of the calves and protects them from danger. Often they grieve when any member of their group dies.

An elephant may live as long as 60-70 years. However, the oldest recorded elephant is 82 years.

These are some of the interesting facts about elephants. In fact, they are quite gentle and have no natural enemies. But, in spite of their calmness and non-disturbing character, it is very unfortunate to say that elephants have been listed as an “endangered animal” because of their declining population. Both the African Elephant and the Asian Elephant are included in the endangered species list. Their population decreases mainly because of habitat loss and human poaching for ivory and flesh. Under Wildlife Conservation, the “African Elephant Conservation Act of 1989″ and the “Asian Elephant Conservation Act of 1997″ have been passed in order to conserve the natural habitats and protect the elephants. Strict laws have been enforced to stop trading of elephants.<!-- This page was viewed on Buzzle.com on 12/3/2008 2:05:01 AM.

Human being is a social being. We live in a society and like to share our feelings, happiness and sorrows with our friends, relatives and others. This wish of togetherness and belonging leads to create a community as a whole. Community is a broader term and has a larger connotation. Presently Internet has contributed a lot in connecting people through various communities. By the way don’t you want to know the value of this very term?

Importance of Community

Usually community refers to a group of people living in a common geographical location. This group of people obeys some social norms and some common value among themselves. As such, there are so many communities the world over, separated by languages, cultures, or geographical locations. However, they are related to each other in some way or other, thus making entire world a one, single community.

A sense of community is important to establish peace and harmony among the society. The division of work, feeling of association, togetherness, and cooperation - all these help in establishing a healthy atmosphere filled with unity, harmony and friendship. The sense of a community is also important in fostering a feeling of intra-national as well as international brotherhood. Let us discuss these points, in an absence of which there will be complete chaos in the community.

Sense of Togetherness

A sense of togetherness lies in the soul of every individual. This comes from our care and dependency on our fellow beings. From our childhood days to our adulthood, we care for our family members, our relatives, our neighbors and friends. This leads to a need of togetherness among people, which helps in creating a community. We tend to enjoy any festival or social ritual together. This is a kind of community feeling. Without community people will be alone, there won’t be anyone to talk to or to share with.

Division of Work

We share our work and this division of work leads to our dependency on other people working in different roles. In every walk of our lives, we have to depend on others apart from our family members. For example, the cobbler repairs shoes for us, the barber cuts our hair, tailor stitches fashionable clothes for us, butcher cuts meat for us, bakers prepares biscuits for us, engineers make houses for us, etc. All these individuals fall into a community, without whom our lives will be very difficult. Division of work is, therefore, important for a well-formed and well-functioning community.

Cooperation

The very idea of community comes into being because people like to cooperate with each other. The sense of cooperation begins at home and it leads to a strong feeling of international brotherhood.

Feeling of Association

In a community people live by associating with one another. The feeling of association is a common human feeling. This helps in establishing peace and harmony within a community. Without a feeling of association there will be chaos and disharmony in the society or community. Hence, this point plays an important role in making a lively and vibrant community.

Thus, with all these points in a perfect combination, a community can help in making a peaceful and progressive society. Likewise, any imbalance could give rise to umpteen problems that are disrupting peace and harmony the world over.

Scorpions are arthropods related to the spiders and they belong to the class known as arachnid. There are different types of scorpions (over 2000 species) and Black Emperor scorpion (Imperial scorpion) is one of them. Though the Imperial scorpion is a native of West Africa, they are also found in abundance in the rainforests around the world.

Black Emperor Scorpion Facts

Emperor scorpions are the largest scorpions on the earth. The length of an adult (fully grown) black emperor is approximately 8 inches; while a young one is around 4 inches long. A black emperor scorpion becomes a fully-grown adult at the age of four. The life span of an emperor scorpion is eight years.

An interesting fact is that a young black emperor scorpion is white in color; the color turns to black with each molting. An emperor scorpion molts at least six times, before becoming an adult.

You can visually differentiate between a female and a male emperor scorpion, by checking out the size of the ‘pectines’ (appendages on the underside of the belly with combs on them). If there are many combs and the length of the combs are long, then the scorpion is a male. A female emperor has very few combs and the combs are shorter in length.

Among all the scorpion family, the black emperor scorpions are the most docile; the sting of this arthropod is mild and the toxicity of the venom is less, hence the pain disappears after a couple of hours. This could be the reason why a black emperor scorpion is an ideal pet for scorpion lovers. It has been categorized as one of the exotic pets.

An emperor scorpion loves to habitat in areas, where the temperature is high. If you are planning to keep an emperor scorpion as a pet, keep an under-tank heater to heat the tank. An ideal temperature is 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Are you curious to know what a black emperor as well as other scorpions eat? An emperor scorpion eats almost anything from lizards to grasshoppers, mice and crickets. Sometimes, they feed on small birds and the smaller species of scorpions. If you have an emperor scorpion as pet, do not overfeed it. On an average, an adult emperor would require only a couple of crickets a day. On a very shallow bowl, keep a small amount of water because a black emperor scorpion is likely to drink water. The best time to feed an emperor scorpion is at night, as it is a nocturnal arthropod.

Do you know a female emperor scorpion would give birth to minimum 40 scorpions at a time? The gestation period of the mother is seven months. The baby scorpions stay on the back of the mother after birth and descend only to eat. The mother scorpion kills a prey and leaves it on the floor of the scorpion nest. The baby scorpions climb down from the mother’s back and feed on the dead insect.

The venom of the black emperor scorpion is not lethal. However, if you have any allergy-related health problems, it is better to be careful while handling this large scorpion.<!-- This page was viewed on Buzzle.com on 12/1/2008 4:47:20 AM.
